In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to a complainant named Sojish from Nettoor, as per the state human rights commission's order. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued the order, stating that the compensation will be deducted from the former SI of Panangad's salary in three equal instalments. Justice JB Kosi, the chairman of the commission, had mandated the compensation. Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was reportedly assaulted by former Panangad SI Vipin AB. The complaint alleges that Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without proper authorization after he had been hospitalized. Sojish subsequently lodged a complaint with the commission, which then instructed that a case be registered against the SI and a compensation be awarded. Although a probe was conducted against the SI and disciplinary measures were taken, no compensation had been provided until the government intervened. It was noted that the SI had been given an opportunity to present a counter-argument before the commission's final decision was made, but he chose not to do so. Consequently, the government ordered the payment of Rs 25,000 to the complainant, Sojish.
